SUMMARY:Past Performance: Clarinet Concerto\, K 622 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
DESCRIPTION:On Mozart’s Birthday\, David Nicholson Performs Mozart Clarinet Concerto \n \nLet’s celebrate Mozart’s birthday (January 27) with a video on our YouTube channel of one of his most sublime works – the Clarinet Concerto – written only two months before his tragically early death.  Forget the pandemic for half an hour\, and bask in the beautiful sound of a performance by the Pasadena Community Orchestra\, recorded in January 2014.  Our soloist was the extraordinary David Nicholson\, and the Orchestra was led by Music Director\, Beth Pflueger. \nMozart had a wide circle of friends in Vienna in the 1780s.  They included the woodwind instrument maker Theodor Lotz\, and a virtuoso on the basset clarinet\, Anton Stadler.  Mozart loved the deep sonority of the lower register of this larger version of the clarinet\, and the still-larger basset horn. Those were productive years in one of Europe’s musical capitals\, and these collaborations – composer\, instrument builder\, and virtuoso performer – yielded many compositions and performances on these instruments.  Over the years their popularity declined\, and these days we hear these works on the modern clarinet.  The Concerto has the classical three-movement form\, with quick outer movements that are bouncy and playful in character.  But no explanation can do justice to the serene beauty of the central slow movement\, a vision of calm and contentment.  Just sit back and let the mellow tones of the clarinet relax you! \nWe were disappointed that we had to cancel the January 2022 concert\, but we hope that this joyous music will lift your spirits for a while.  The Orchestra loves to play for a live audience!  We’ll be back in March to resume our 2021-22 season. Be sure to check the Events page for the most up to date concert information. \n

SUMMARY:Pasadena Community Orchestra – January concert postponed to March 11
DESCRIPTION:We regret that tonight’s concert is postponed.  But stay tuned – we’ll have a video recording from a past performance for you next week – in honor of Mozart’s birthday. \nBecause of the omicron Covid variant we have postponed our January concert.  Our concern for the safety of orchestra members rehearsing and performing and for our audience members attending is paramount\, so the recent surge in the omicron Covid variant left us with no other option than to postpone. \nWe will perform the planned works for the January program at our Friday March 11\, 2022 Concert at 8:00 p.m.  The musical works will be some exciting and unusual pieces from our brass\, woodwind\, and string sections!  Once again\, the performance will be at the Pasadena High School Auditorium. As before\, face masks and proof of vaccination will be required; there is plenty of space at this venue for social distancing. \nThe Orchestra loves to play for a live audience\, and we really miss you!  We will continue to offer live music for our community\, but only when we are sure it is safe to do so.  Following the March concert\, check out the Event Listing for Friday May 6.  And if you are nostalgic for our in-person concerts\, please look us up on our YouTube channel !  Video recordings of most of the works from the November 5\, 2021 concert are now available. \nWe hope to see you on March 11 !
