In 1983, a group of local musicians, led by Conductor Wayne Reinecke, made their dream a reality with the founding of Pasadena Community Orchestra. The original group of musicians and board members were volunteers who possessed energy, passion, and vision. The first rehearsal and performance venue was the Methodist Church of Pasadena. In 1987, PCO was invited to move their concerts to First Church of the Nazarene, Pasadena (PazNaz), where they continue to perform today.
In 2008, after twenty-five years at the helm, Wayne Reinecke retired from the podium. PCO's board conducted a competitive search for his replacement and selected his son, Alan Reinecke, a timpanist with the orchestra for over twenty years, as the new Music Director and Conductor. During his interview, Alan confessed to having studied orchestral scores as a hobby, for the sheer joy of it. Alan brings a keen musical vision and repertoire to PCO, and PCO looks forward to his leadership and guidance through the upcoming seasons.
PCO has grown to a full orchestra comprised of 60 to 70 members from the greater Pasadena area, who volunteer their time and talent to bring great music to the public free of charge. The organization continues its strong commitment to music education programming through the Young Artist Competition and the Concert in the Park, which takes place at the end of each season in Sierra Madre Memorial Park. PCO musicians come from all walks of life; there are doctors, lawyers, teachers, artists, and photographers. A handful of the founders continue to be involved with the orchestra. Among them are: Linda Boyd, flute, Gilbert Bottcher, clarinet, Gary Green, librarian, and Becky Spiro, technical support. Founders Wayne and Sue Reinecke continue to be involved in an advisory capacity.
The PCO is supported by donations from individuals and companies, including grants from City and County agencies, which recognize the importance of continuing the great tradition of music in the community. |
